What this is
The change in household electricity prices recorded in the Consumer Price Index since the June quarter 2022, shown next to overall inflation. The ABS counts government bill rebates as a price reduction while they are paid.
Why it matters
Power bills hit every household and business. Before the 2022 election, lower power bills were a central promise.
More from the figures
- Overall prices rose 16.8% over the same period.
- The ABS measures electricity prices after government energy bill rebates. While rebates are paid they lower the measured price, but taxpayers still fund them.
- ABS monthly CPI: electricity prices rose 21.1% in the 12 months to May 2026, or 3.9% excluding the effect of Commonwealth and state bill rebates, which were winding down.
How it’s calculated
ABS CPI electricity index and all-groups index, each rebased so the June quarter 2022 = 100.
