What this is
How much Australia's population grew over the past year, divided by the number of new homes finished in the same year.
Why it matters
The average household has about 2.5 people. When population grows by more than that for every new home, the shortage of homes gets worse and rents and prices tend to rise.
More from the figures
- In the 12 months to the March quarter 2026 Australia's population grew by 392,800 and 173,404 new homes were completed.
- That is 2.3 new residents for every new home, against an average of 2.1 from 2003 to 2019.
- The average Australian household has about 2.5 people (Census 2021).
- Population growth includes births, deaths and net overseas migration. Homes completed are new dwellings only, before any demolitions.
How it’s calculated
Change in ABS estimated resident population over the latest 4 quarters, divided by the number of new dwellings completed over the same 4 quarters.
